Our featured students this week are from the Century High School Civics class. These students took a trip to the Avemere Hillsboro Senior Living community On Thursday, Jan. 9, participating in an activity to “bridge the generation gap.” The students presented their research on life in the United States throughout the 1950s and 1960s— which is when many of the Avamere residents were young adults—including popular culture, fashion, news, and major events. Later, the CHS students interviewed the residents on their personal experiences over these two decades. “We learn about history in high school, and that’s more about dates and events,” said Keira Smith, a Century High School junior. “Hearing it from someone in-person is a better learning experience for me.” When asked about the unique way this blends civics and history, teacher Erica DeBois said “I try to make things interdisciplinary whenever it fits. I think this is a perfect opportunity … because this is living history. [We] took it as an opportunity to research the decades when the residents were young adults and [close to] the ages that these students are.”” The students plan on returning to Avamere in the spring to present collages with visuals inspired by the stories they heard from the residents in their interviews.
