036 – I Found Solace When She Explained The Abuse

Despite loving and respecting his parents, Chris struggled through family life with an alcoholic father and having almost adopted sister with emotional problems. Chris had a challenging childhood being bullied at school and dropping out of his senior year of high school. After Chris left the U. S. Marine Corps, he started his search. His outreach to his birth mother got her in deep trouble, and his half-brother was scared out of making contact with Chris. Thankfully, he was able to make a connection with his mother and brother who opened up to Chris like he had never done before. Podcast). Chris (00:03): And basically she explained all the abuse that she went through, all the horror that she went through. How can you not forgive someone for giving you up for adoption after what they've gone through? Voices (00:20): Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Damon (00:27): This is Who Am I Really, a podcast about adoptees that have located and connected with their biological family members. I'm Damon Davis and on today's show is Chris. He's a Rhode Island native whose family has been in public service in the community for years. Chris had a challenging childhood, being bullied and doing poorly in school and struggling through the family life with an alcoholic father and having an almost adopted sister with emotional problems. After he left the Marine Corps, he started his search, but his outreach to his birth mother got her in deep trouble. Thankfully, he was able to make a connection with her and his brother who opened up to Chris like he had never done before. This is Chris's journey. When I received Chris's brief background introducing himself and his adoption journey, he had written that he had lost his biological sister that same night. I began by offering my condolences to him and his family. Chris will share her piece of his journey later, he says his mother and father told him he was adopted from an early age and they even knew his original first and middle names. Chris's mother couldn't have children, so they adopted him and another girl who would have been his older sister, he recalls a stressful time in his house while she was there, his father's alcoholism and abuse by a paternal relative when he was a young man. Damon (01:57): I've read a lot of astonishing things in people's submissions, but I've never heard anyone say, you know, literally tonight someone in my biological family passed away and I was just, I was blown by that and I'm sure you guys were too. So again, my condolences to you and your family. Chris (02:12): Well thank you. Damon (02:13): So I would love it if you would just do me a favor and take me all the way back to when you were a child. Tell me a little bit about what it was like growing up in your family as an adoptee. Chris (02:23): Um, my mom and dad told me, this is early as I can remember having a conversation with them since the beginning. In fact, they had, they actually had my first name and my middle name right, but they just never knew my last name, my surname. Damon (02:35): Oh, okay. So they knew plenty of information about you except for that? Chris (02:38): Yes. Correct. Damon (02:40): And you were comfortable in your home. Did you have siblings? Chris (02:44): Uh, no I did not. Well actually I did, but she was taken.. They, my mom couldn't have kids, which is why I was adopted. Um, I was actually brought home on father's day in, uh, would've been 1968 and that was pretty cool. So every father's day my father said that to me, you know, this is a day we brought you home, you know. So, um, yeah, as far as, um, having siblings close, my mom couldn't have kids and she wanted more than just me, so they adopted... Support this podcast
