27: Afghanistan's first openly gay person, Nemat Sadat
Back in 2013, journalist Nemat Sadat, a gay man, was accused of subverting Islam in Afghanistan. But instead of hiding, Sadat decide to come out. He wrote a post on Facebook saying that "Yes, I’m proud to be gay, Afghan, American and Muslim", becoming the first openly gay Afghan born person to do so. In this episode, at the end of the Pride month, Sandip talks to Sadat about what made him finally come out, why people around him saw it as an act of cowardice, his skepticism of 'liberal' Islam and about the recent novel he's written called The Carper Weaver - a gay coming of age story set in Kabul, Pakistan and the United States.
