2 Corinthians 12:10 NLT

'That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.'

Stress is so prevalent in the workplace that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have recommended resilience training for Britain’s workforce. Work issues, including working outside normal hours, as well as a poor work/life balance is the second highest cause of stress after health issues. In 2016 NHS staff took 15 million days off due to stress, anxiety and depression.

The HSE has identified six key areas of the workplace that need to be managed and controlled effectively in order to prevent excess stress at work and stress-related illnesses. These are: demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. Employers and employees should assess the risks in these areas to manage stress in the workplace.

Ignoring stress can lead to issues with both medical and mental health. It is debilitating, destructive and may give rise to unhealthy patterns of behaviour, such as alcohol dependence. I began to drink regularly each evening when I was passing through a very difficult period in my life. Initially I didn’t even recognise the pattern; only when I realised how many beer bottles I was recycling each week did I see that I was turning to alcohol as a means of managing my stress.

The fact is, I am unable to manage my life in its entirety without help. My help comes primarily from the Lord (Psalm 121:1-2). Such help means I acknowledge my own weakness, as Paul honestly owned his (2 Corinthians 12:9-11), and of course God’s help is discovered in a meaningful connectedness as well as through the support and encouragement of Christian friends.

Paul declared his weakness as the source of his life in God. In accepting your weakness and offering it to God, you create the space in which God’s grace and sustenance will strengthen your walk of faith and empower you in all of life.

QUESTION: What are the main sources of stress in your life?

PRAYER: Lord, help me to be honest about my weaknesses and find the help and support I need.
