#20 - Shut Up And Do Something Already

Alright! Hey everyone, Kirk here again at Option Alpha and welcome back to the daily call. I think today’s call is going to be a little different for some of you guys because I’m going to go on a little bit of a rant here on stuff. But I say this in all honesty because it’s made a difference to me and I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before. I think I’ve maybe mentioned this person before in other podcast or other videos before, but you probably hear me referencing him a lot because he had a big influence on my life early on and was probably… Initially, I really hated this guy. I mean, seriously. I’ll tell you who he is here in a second, but I really didn’t like him. The reason I didn’t like him was because he challenged me and that’s tough. I initially got introduced to this guy who was my coach and I’ll just say his name was Coach Anderson. If you’re listening out there, Coach Anderson which I doubt you are listening to an options trading podcast, but hey, listen, shoot me an email and let’s connect. But he had a big influence on my life early on when I was just getting into high school. He ended up being a football coach for me, I was in one of his classrooms and then he ended up also coaching me in baseball. Again, I initially really, really hated Coach Anderson because he was aggressive, he was loud, he was obnoxious, but man, he challenged me and he would always push me and just say things that now, even to this day, I still, still remember like I hear the echoes of what he’s doing and I think about that obviously when I start talking about this and start ranting and do everything with Option Alpha, is I want to make an impact like he made an impact on me. One of the things that he used to say is he would tell me to shut up and I used to initially think to myself like, “Is he really telling me to shut up? Is he losing his mind?” But I would say something and he’d be like, “Kirk, shut up.” I’d be like, “What?” He’s like, “No, shut up.” I’d try to talk again and every time I try to talk, he would say, “Kirk, shut up.” Then he would say, “And just do something already.” That had a big impact on me because I thought to myself like, “Okay, fine. Forget it! I’m going to do it! I’m so mad!” At the moment, you’re so mad and so caught up in it sometimes. At least I wasn’t this case that you’d just be like, “Okay, I’m just going to do it because man, this guy, I’m going to show him.” You know what I mean? It was his way of motivating me and helping me get over a threshold that I need to get over, whether it was doing a drill or running a mile or doing something in school because he taught math, so doing something in school. It was a way for him to motivate me and get me to the next level and it was totally non-conventional. Probably anytime now, if somebody said “Shut up” to a kid in school or a teacher, I don’t know, they might get ridden off, but not back when I went to school, this was not like the norm by any means. But he had his people that he liked and he definitely liked me and that’s why he pushed me. But I think the key here is just this concept of, “Shut up and do something already.” Someone actually emailed me just the other day and which is where this is coming out of in this little rant. But they emailed me and said all this stuff they were going to do. It’s this whole dissertation email. It probably took 20 minutes to write the email, very detailed. “I’m going to do this on this day. I’m going to do this on this day. I’m going to do that and that and...” It’s very thoughtful. I emailed them back and I did not email back and say, “Shut up.” But I emailed them back and said, “Okay, just do it.” That was it. They wanted all this in-depth analysis of their plan that they were going to have for me. “Kirk, what do you think about this framework? What do you think about this timeline? What do you think about how I’ve laid out my day and what I’m going to do?” I’m not here to judge whatever you do. I’m just saying like, “Shut up and do the work.” I think that that’s more important and I learned that lesson more so from Coach Anderson than probably anybody else in my entire life, that he would just say, “Just shut up and put your nose to the grindstone. Shut up and just do it. Don’t talk about doing it. Don’t write about doing it. Don’t say you’re going to do it or don’t think about doing it. Just for God’s sakes, just do it!” There’s often another thing and I’ll just use this as well and hopefully this helps out. Again, this podcast is not necessarily just about options trading as I said in show number one. It’s about everything. I think this is so applicable to so many things. We all talk about doing this and talk about doing that, but at the end of the day, we just have to freaking do it. We just have to put our nose down and stop looking around, stop daydreaming, stop watching whatever you’re watching, Game of Thrones or whatever is on and just do what needs to be done. Another powerful thing that I often have and actually, it is part of my every morning when I get up. I read these affirmations and I’ve talked about this on other podcasts too, but I read these affirmations and one is called “the decision train.” The decision train is basically an image that shows that 95% of people go through a process which is they think about a decision, they think about an action then they do the action and then they hopefully get the result. That’s what 95% of people do. The 5% of people who are really, really successful, what they do is they just predetermine things that they want to do and they do it every day, regardless of how they feel, what they think, whatever. They get up and they workout. They just do it. They don’t even think like, “Okay, alright. I got to get up, I got to work out.” It just becomes habit to them to do it. Then they think about what they’ve done, reflect on it and then they get the result that they want. That’s what most successful people do. Their decision path is actually – Action, thought and then result versus thought, action and result. That’s a very fine line of distinction, but it’s along the same methodology and thought process of just like – Stop thinking about it. Stop talking about it. For God’s sakes, just do it and then reassess later on. Just get it done and adjust along the way type situation. Again, so I can really thank Coach Anderson for instilling that in me. That’s tough initially. It maybe is tough for some of you guys to even just hear me say this or even read a podcast title that says, “Shut up and do something.” But I think hopefully you understand. It actually comes from a place of love and support and wanting to improve your life and maybe hopefully, wanting to motivate you enough or get you angry enough to actually take action. That’s what he did for me and it definitely worked and I still carry that same process with me today. Hopefully this helps out. As always, if you guys need anything or have any comments, let me know. Until next time, happy trading!
