What to Expect During Liver Transplant Surgery?

In this 2nd episode, we will learn how liver transplant occurs and how does recovery of the patient occurs after transplant. There are two types of liver transplant, Living Donor and Deceased Donor.In the Living Donor Liver Transplant process, the patient is admitted a day before. All your reports are re-examined and some tests are done. After examining the reports, your video and written consent are taken, in which you are informed about the transplant process, its complications.In a deceased donor liver transplant, when a cadaver or organ is available, you are called for a transplant. This transplant occurs on the emergency basis. You can be called anytime as soon as you get an organ. The subsequent process is similar to that of living donor liver transplant.In both types of liver transplant process, the first donor surgery begins. The liver of the donor is checked. And if the liver is good, then the process of surgery of the recipient is started. Complete liver is removed in both types of liver transplant process.If the transplant is living donor liver transplant, then half of the liver is fixed into recipient’s body and if the transplant is deceased donor liver transplant, then the whole liver is fixed into recipient’s body.The average time for this entire process is 8 - 10 hours. After the transplant is over, the patient is shifted to the ICU.
