The Emergency was declared in India on the basis of internal disturbances from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, due to controversial circumstances of political instability under the prime ministership of Indira Gandhi. An Indian politician Inder Kumar Gujral served as the 12th Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. Gujral joined the Congress party (INC) in 1964 and was very close to Indira Gandhi. During the period of Emergency in June 1975, Gujral was serving as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, where he was in charge of the media and Doordarshan during a time of censorship.
